A Tape Recorder begins to roll.

AIDAN

Is this really necessary?

THERAPIST(?)

Yes, it will help you get it all out. Ms. Sörgel, you did agree to this method. If we need to back out, we can-

AIDAN

No, no it’s fine it's just. I didn’t realize it would be recorded.

THERAPIST(?)

One copy will be kept with your file so we can look back on it. The other can be taken home with you for you to decide what to do with it. Does that work?

AIDAN

Yes… I suppose. Okay. Uhm…

THERAPIST(?)

Your relationship with your family. Start there.

AIDAN

Okay, yeah my… my family. I didn’t exactly come from a very warm household. I mean- They were lovely people! Very friendly and there was nothing going on with like, oh I don’t know, I wasn’t mistreated I think. Not in a way that would matter.

THERAPIST(?)

Feels a little harsh to say about your treatment.

AIDAN

Well they didn’t yell at me or call me things. They never hit me. They just… I was the fourth of six siblings. We all were spaced out a bit, I think the closet age gap was 4 years? We didn’t exactly connect easily. My parents were a bit closed off too. We just all existed on our own in a big house. Family dinners were a warm meal left out to come grab when it was time.

THERAPIST(?)

Neglect?

AIDAN

They took care of us. There was never that loving part of it. We were just things they looked after then moved on. No favorites. No gifts. Just two care takers. I’ll skip the boring childhood, nothing much happened there.

THERAPIST(?)

Nothing? Are we not forgetting-

AIDAN

Sorry, right right. I uhm. It’s nothing really. Just… They let us roam a lot, my parents. Especially once we were around twelve or thirteen. Something about coming into our own. We lived on a big property, old one too. Historic. It’s Maine, you throw a rock and you find some historic building anywhere here.

EXT. PLANE WRECK IN THE OCEAN - DAY
The sun is now just reaching halfway in the sky when the phone focuses back on the couple. Derek is getting paler and the water is a lot more red than before. The couple is still clinging to the wing, but the metal is starting to heat up. They are occasionally splashing the metal, trying to keep it
cool. Something dark and large moves under Taylor, causing her to jump and start scrambling up the wing.

TAYLOR
Something bumped my foot. Derek, there's something-!

DEREK
Hey, don’t—

Taylor starts to panic and kick her legs.

DEREK (CONT’D)
Taylor look at me, you need to hold still. Don’t splash, don’t fight, just... drift.

Taylor stills, letting herself drift. There is movement behind them, and Derek tugs Taylor closer so she doesn’t look behind her.
Out of focus from the camera, several large grey forms begin tugging and grabbing at the body floating, with the fins being spotted as they eat.

TAYLOR
Are they—

DEREK
Yes. Yes they’re eating him.

Taylor gags, covering her mouth.

TAYLOR
Oh my god.

Derek squeezes her hand again, pulling them both further onto the wing.

DEREK
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry Taylor.

The two drift on the wing as they ignore the sharks behind them. Eventually, the fins retreat, but begin circling the wreckage, even with the body of the pilot now gone.
The recording skips again.

The Archivist leans down and loads a tape into a cassette player. He clicks the record tab on the cassette recorder and it begins to roll.

ARCHIVIST
Today’s date is the twenty seventh day of the seventh month, twenty-five ninety-eight. We are in cycle seven around planet alpha one nine five.

The Archivist takes a seat across the desk from Seán.

ARCHIVIST
The following recording is incident statement theta six two five, taken by Archive Unit 2891 for security purposes. Please state your name for the record.

SEÁN
Seán Marryn Lockhead. Hired Gun on board the Indomitable.

Seán wrings his hands, hunched over in his seat.

SEÁN
Is all this really necessary?

The Archivist sighs. He drums his fingers against the desk.

ARCHIVIST
Yes. This is protocol for all incidents. Please proceed with your statement. Include as much detail as possible.

SEÁN
Right, well. We have been on this ship for about... oh has it been just about three years now? We have stopped at a number of planets so far. Sort of a mixed bag with all those. Some planets are amazing while others are quickly found out to be very unsafe for our crew and, in turn, humans at large. You know, it’s our job to go down there and check things out, so of course some expeditions are going to be a bit more dangerous than others. This one time, back in year one, I-

The Archivist clears his throat. He glares at Seán.

SEÁN
Sorry, right, sorry. The incident.

Seán tugs at his shirt and sits up.

SEÁN
See I uh. I’m just the guns. Served three deployments back on Earth, none were that long but you know how it is. War is war. When you win one battle, the next is ready to knock you back down.

Seán runs a hand through his hair.

SEÁN
It changes you. Though, I guess that is what you all needed up here. Someone who wouldn’t hesitate to shoot something dangerous. Rather good insurance policy, if you ask me.
